Hyundai Ioniq 7 flagship electric SUV will have a lot in common with the Kia EV9 as both will share the E-GMP platform
At the 2024 Busan Motor Show in June, Hyundai will reportedly debut the new flagship electric three-row SUV, dubbed the Ioniq 7. It will be the third model in the Ioniq family of dedicated EVs following the Ioniq 5 electric crossover and the Ioniq 6 electric sedan – both have been well received by customers. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 is already on sale in India.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6, rivalling Tesla Model 3, was showcased at the 2023 Auto Expo, just over a year ago in India and it could be introduced in the near future as well. The production of the upcoming Hyundai Ioniq 7 will begin in the brand’s homeland of South Korea around the same time as its world debut. It is expected to be rolled out of Hyundai’s plant in Georgia, US next year.
Hyundai sells the Ioniq 5 via CKD route in India and thus it is competitively priced against its sibling and main rival, Kia EV6. With Kia planning to introduce the EV9 three-row electric SUV later this year in India, the Hyundai Ioniq 7, which has a lot in common with the EV9, could make its way to our local market in the coming years.
The road testing of the Ioniq 7 commenced a while ago on foreign soil and the exterior looks to be heavily influenced by the Seven concept, which was unveiled at the LA Auto Show in late 2021. The spy images suggest that the lighting systems at the front and rear, roofline and overall dimensions will replicate the conceptual version but we will have to wait and see.
It will be underpinned by the same E-GMP skateboard platform as the EV9. The battery packs and electric motors could also be borrowed but with minor changes in capacities and outputs respectively. The base model could use a single e-motor capable of 218 PS and the dual electric motor configuration should enable a combined power output of 585 PS.
It will run on 21-inch wheels and the exterior will be designed to have low centre of gravity and drag coefficient. It will be equipped with a large touchscreen and digital cluster, Level 3 ADAS and much more. The 76.1 kWh battery pack returns a driving range of 370 km while the larger 99.8 kWh battery pack is capable of 489 km range in the EPA cycle in the EV9.
