Alcaraz secured the first set 6-4 in this much-anticipated clash, which comes just five weeks after their epic match to decide the French Open champion.
Sinner broke the Spaniard’s serve in the opening game of the second set and maintained his lead throughout. This was despite an interruption from a fan in the stands who popped a champagne bottle as Sinner prepared to serve at 2-1. The cork landed at Sinner’s feet, prompting Alcaraz to raise his hands and shake his head in frustration.
Sinner lost the subsequent point but went on to hold serve, leading 3-1.
This Centre Court match-up between the top-ranked Sinner and second-ranked Alcaraz marks the first time since Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in 2006, 2007, and 2008 that the same two men have faced off in the title matches on clay at Roland-Garros and grass at the All England Club in the same year.
Alcaraz, a 22-year-old from Spain, defeated the 22-year-old Italian Sinner in five sets over 5 hours and 29 minutes in Paris on June 8, coming back from a two-set deficit and saving three match points.
This made Alcaraz 5-0 in Grand Slam finals, including victories at Wimbledon in 2023 and 2024.
He also carries a career-best 24-match winning streak into Sunday and has beaten Sinner five times consecutively.
Sinner, who owns three major trophies, is playing in his fourth consecutive Slam final but his first at the All England Club.
He won the U.S. Open last September and the Australian Open in January.
Sinner is wearing tape and an arm sleeve to protect his right elbow, which he has been using since falling in the opening game of his fourth-round win on Monday. After eliminating 24-time major champion Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals, Sinner mentioned he did not think his elbow would be an issue on Sunday.
