Toyota Land Cruiser FJ 4×4 SUV To Likely Be Unveiled In December

GaadiWaadi –

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is slated to be positioned below the latest LC Prado as a compact 4×4 SUV; will reportedly debut towards the end of the year

Toyota is said to be in the process of developing a smaller version of the Land Cruiser, potentially adopting the FJ moniker upon its global unveiling in December 2024 in Japan. This model will utilize a ladder frame chassis and was initially teased midway through last year. The baby LC aims to cater to a broader market segment, positioned below the latest Land Cruiser 250 (Prado) and the larger Land Cruiser 300.

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ name has been trademarked and is speculated to be used for the potential rival to the Ford Bronco Sport. To control production costs, Toyota is expected to utilize the same platform found in the Hilux Champ commercial pickup. Initially, this affordable off-road SUV was rumoured to feature both internal combustion and hybrid powertrains, with potential plans to transition into an electric vehicle in the future.

According to the latest reports, the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is expected to offer a pure ICE option only. The likely contender for this engine is the 2.7L four-cylinder 2TR-FE NA petrol engine, which is already utilized in the Hilux Champ and LC 250 models. With an output of 163 PS and 246 Nm of torque, this engine could be paired with a six-speed torque converter automatic transmission, delivering power to all four wheels.

In certain markets, the gasoline engine option for the Toyota Land Cruiser FJ may be limited while more developed markets could potentially receive more powerful engines similar to those found in the Corolla Cross or RAV4. Options could include the 2.0L inline four-cylinder and the 2.5L four-cylinder units. Additionally, there is speculation about the inclusion of a PHEV variant.

The compact 4×4 SUV will draw significant design inspiration from the Compact Cruiser EV concept. It may feature tall pillars and upright proportions to maintain its rugged aesthetic. With a long wheelbase, the vehicle could offer a spacious cabin and ample boot space, while high ground clearance would enhance its practicality and off-road capability.

The Toyota Land Cruiser FJ is expected to be slightly smaller than the RAV4 and might also be considered for the Indian market since plans for the India-specific seven-seater Corolla Cross seem to have been put on hold.
