Volkswagen Tayron SUV could debut in India next year through the CKD route; will be bigger than the Tiguan
Volkswagen introduced the brand-new Tayron SUV at the 2024 Beijing Motor Show. It will be released in China soon and will reach other markets including India next year. Known as the Tiguan L Pro in China, it will carry the Tayron name in other regions. The Tayron has many similarities with the new generation of the international-spec Tiguan.
The exterior design of the Tayron draws significant inspiration from the Tiguan, featuring sporty elements on the front fascia, such as a criss-cross black grille in the R grade and a wide air inlet. Additional highlights include black finished alloy wheels, a muscular bonnet section, prominent side character lines amidst a clean profile, blackened pillars, and a sleek rear profile.
The German auto major launched the third-generation Tiguan globally late last year. The Tayron, a larger version featuring three rows of seats, measures 4,735 mm in length, 1,859 mm in width, and 1,682 mm in height with a wheelbase of 2,791 mm – making it larger than its sibling.
The Tayron’s interior shares numerous features with the standard Tiguan, such as a dashboard with a trio of screens: a central touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel, and a landscape screen for the front passenger. The flat-bottom steering wheel includes mounted controls and the reduced presence of physical buttons contributes to its upscale ambiance.
The black interior theme complements the exterior of the top-end R variant, while the MIB4 connectivity system provides the latest features. The equipment list includes wireless charger, a 360-degree camera system, heated and ventilated driver and front passenger seats, a HUD, dual-zone automatic AC, ADAS, premium surface trims and materials and a whole lot more.
In terms of performance, the VW Tayron is equipped with a 2.0L four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine that delivers either 184 hp or 217 hp in the Chinese market. This engine is mated exclusively to a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, with all-wheel drive available in the higher trims. For global markets, a 2.0L turbo diesel engine and a 1.5L plug-in hybrid (PHEV) with an electric-only range of up to 100 km may also be offered.
