A pcb board maker is used to create the base for an electronic circuit. It consists of non-conductive materials with copper traces and pads on it that form interconnections between the various components soldered to it. These circuit boards may be single-sided, double-sided or multi-layered.
PCBs are used in a huge variety of consumer, commercial and industrial devices. The most common are computers, mobile devices and appliances. However, they are also found in medical equipment such as heart rate monitors and glucose monitors. Pacemakers and internal surgical equipment rely on them too. The military is another major user of PCBs, as they are at the cutting edge of technology.
The manufacturing process begins with the preparation of the bare board material, usually made from FR-4 high-temperature polyimide or a similar dielectric composite. Unwanted copper is removed from the surface of the board with a chemical solution. Then, a photosensitive coating is applied to the bare board. When exposed to light, the coating images onto the board where it is etched to remove the unwanted copper.
Once the copper is removed, holes are drilled into the board. This is done by computer-controlled drilling machines using Excellon files describing the locations and sizes of the holes. Some of the holes are made conductive by electroplating them, while others connect layers of the board. Some conductive holes are plated through to accept the leads of through-hole components, while others are for insertion of surface-mount components. The holes are then cleaned and sanded to ensure that the pads will be solderable.

These are then coated with solder mask, which is typically green, but can be various colors including SparkFun red, Arduino blue, or Apple black. This mask protects the copper traces from corrosion, electrical shorts and other issues that might occur during assembly. Alternatively, the area can be silkscreen printed with letters, numbers, symbols and imagery, as well as stenciled for paste application during soldering.
Before the pcb board maker is finished, it is inspected by technicians to make sure that all areas covered with resist are meant to remain that way. This is especially important for boards with multiple layers, since any mistakes made at this stage will become apparent later in the production process and could cause faulty products.
After inspection, the pcb is ready to be used for a final product. The solder mask is removed and the bare copper metal is dipped in a bath of molten solder. This is then quickly cooled, leaving solder joints on all pad surfaces for attaching components. The pcb then receives its final finishing touches which can include hot air-leveling of the pads, silkscreen printing of text and other graphics, and etch-resistant solder mask. These are then ready to be shipped out for use in a wide variety of applications.
